Habitation Checks

Annual safety inspections for your motorhome or caravan

What is a Habitation Check?

A habitation check is an annual, multi-point safety inspection of your vehicle's living quarters. It not only ensures everything is working properly, but it also highlights any issues that need attention, ensuring safety and compliance as well as comfort and longevity of your motorhome/caravan.

It covers gas (visual only), 12V/230V electrical systems, water appliances, fire safety, ventilation, and a damp survey.

What is Included?

A standard check assesses the safety and operational efficiency of several key areas:

Gas Systems

We check for dangerous gas issues, including hose age and condition, leaks, ventilation and appliance testing — we are looking for a clean burning flame.

Ventilation

We inspect your vehicle's windows, roof lights and vents to ensure that they are free flowing.

Electrical Systems

Tests 12V leisure batteries and 230V mains electrics, including RCD trips and sockets.

Water & Plumbing

Inspects the water pump, taps, shower, toilet, and hot water boiler for leaks and efficient drainage.

Damp Check

Measures moisture levels in walls, floors, ceilings and skylights to catch costly water ingress early. We use specialist equipment to identify damp; early detection protects from costly damp repairs.

Fire & Safety

Checks smoke/CO alarms, fire extinguishers, and the security of windows and roof lights.

Before Your Habitation Check

Our engineer needs full access to your motorhome before a habitation check.

Whatever you feel may cause obstructions needs to be taken away — for example, we advise that you empty your lockers, as those areas will be checked as well for water ingress.

Is a Caravan / Motorhome Habitation Check a Legal Requirement?

In the UK, caravan and motorhome habitation checks aren't a legal requirement. However, it's strongly recommended for several reasons:

Many manufacturers and insurers require an annual habitation check to keep your warranty or cover valid.

Regular checks improve safety and help prevent problems like damp or gas leaks by identifying them early.

So, while you're not legally obliged, a habitation check for your caravan or motorhome is best practice, saving you both money and stress in the long run.
